Feed Mills

Why are Feed Mills necessary?

The future of the Livestock & Poultry industry looks brighter with a growing domestic market, rapid industrialisation and economic liberalization. Several breakthroughs in livestock and poultry science and technology have led to development of genetically superior animals/birds of high production, even under adverse climate conditions. Availability of quality feed, pharmaceuticals and health care products including vaccines are some of the important factors contributing to higher productivity and healthy stock for better performance.

As far as the feed industry is concerned almost 70% of the production cost is contributed by the feed. The production depends on the quality-balanced feed for all categories of birds and animal under intensive system of farming. Due to shrinkage of the grazing land and introduction of the hi-tech system of farming with exotic germ-plasm, the balance feed become inevitable for economic production and to maintain the healthy stock. The feed industries have tremendous potentiality in the state as the commercialisation of the livestock sector is gradually taken place and the sector is growing rapidly during this decade. The feed industry could be a viable enterprise if the main constrain of sourcing of raw materials could be done rationally and local raw materials could be utilized scientifically for better feed at a reasonable price.

Manufacturing animal feed takes raw agricultural ingredients, such as corn, wheat, sorghum, forage, vitamins, additives and minerals and formulates them into a nutritious feed tailored for a production animal’s specific dietary needs.

Where in Assam?

Feed plant at Sonapur: Two feed plant has been set up for production of mesh feed about 2 Metric Ton per hour and 3 Metric Ton pallet feed per hour. The feed mill produces different type of feeds for the animals and birds and also to supply to their own farms, departmental farms. This also covers different schemes, individual farmers, integrators of broiler farming under its operational wing.
